• A coral reef in the middle of Upper Franconia? Yes, it exists and is connected with the Animal Ecology research group. They have several saltwater aquariums where they study the effects of climate change on coral reefs.
  
  
• Many departments offer open house days for grammar school students, including some degree programmes in the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.
  
  
• Students of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Earth Sciences can complete a supplementary programme in “Environmental Law” (website in German).
  
  
• The very first lecture at the University of Bayreuth took place on 3 November 1975. It was given by Professor Erwin Beck and entitled “Introduction to Biology”.

Can we conserve the environment and resources in a sustainable way? How do climate change and microplastics affect the environment? How can energy be efficiently converted and used? These questions illustrate the forward-looking issues that the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Earth Sciences are addressing.

Supplementary studies
While the supplementary programme “Environmental Law” is offered specifically to students of Faculty II and VI, the University of Bayreuth offers a variety of supplementary programmes that are open to all students. In addition to their main studies, students can acquire further certificates in many professionally relevant subject areas. These include Africa, China, diversity or interculturality, theatre didactics, entrepreneurship and sustainability.
