FZA: Research Centre for Society, Technology, and Ecology in Africa
The Research Centre for Africa (FZA) is a new facility dedicated to Africa-related research at the University of Bayreuth and its partner institutions. It will unite the different Africa-related research structures that were previously spread across the city, and host researchers connected to Bayreuth African Studies. The MediaLab in the building links Media Studies with African Studies and will be core to the digital strategy of the IAS.

Teacher Education
The building for the Faculty of Humanities II is also home to Education Sciences, an integral part of the Teacher Education training. It’s worth noting that there was a royal teacher training college in Bayreuth as early as 1895; the building now houses the Markgräfin-Wilhelmine-Gymnasium. At the University of Bayreuth, you can study Teacher Education for vocational schools (metalworking or electrical engineering) and various subject combinations for Teacher Education at Realschulen (mid-level secondary schools) and Gymnasien (upper-level secondary schools).

African Studies
A unique feature of the University of Bayreuth is the research focus on African Studies, which has existed since its foundation. There are research projects and collaborations in many disciplines, ranging from cultural and linguistic studies to economics and law, from earth and life sciences to engineering. Degree programmes and the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) attract young international scholars, and Bayreuth is currently home to the “Africa Multiple” Cluster of Excellence. Off-campus, you can explore the works of renowned African artists in Bayreuth’s Iwalewa House or attend the annual Cinema Africa Film Days, which showcase current film productions from and about Africa.
