[11] FAN & NW III: Ingenieurwissenschaften & Naturwissenschaften III (Faculty of Engineering Science & Natural Sciences III)
- Every year, students from the University of Bayreuth take part in the Formula Student competition with a home-made electric racing car. The association responsible for this is called “Elefant Racing e.V.”. Aspiring engineers, economists and computer scientists can even earn credits for their studies. They also learn soft skills such as teamwork, project management and interaction with industrial partners.
- The Faculty of Engineering Science was originally known as the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences, which is still evident in the abbreviations on the buildings.
- Every third Friday in November, the Metallic Materials research group at the University of Bayreuth hosts a “public lecture on materials science”.
- In the Biomaterials research group, the properties of spider silk are investigated. Despite its lightness, spider silk is five times stronger than steel and can be stretched to 140 per cent of its length without breaking. The aim is to artificially produce spider silk proteins for industrial applications.
Faculty VI: Engineering Science
Did you know that spider silk is five times as strong as steel and yet as elastic as rubber? This is just one of the many phenomena that the research groups of Faculty VI in Bayreuth are engaged with. Their research areas encompass various materials, process technologies, energy science and technology, as well as mechatronics and sensor technology.
Art: Sonnenscheibe (Sun Disc)
An art installation by Florian Lechner, made of glass and steel. It represents an enlarged cross-section of a unicellular aquatic organism called a sun animal. Light reflects off the concrete base.
Campus Academy
Campus Academy (Campus-Akademie), located in Building D of the Faculty of Engineering Science, is a continuing education facility of the University of Bayreuth. It offers seminars, certified courses and part-time degree programmes. These programmes are aligned with the University of Bayreuth’s core curriculum and focus on sport, health, ethics, business and law.

Diversity
In FAN III, you’ll also find the Diversity Service Centre of the University of Bayreuth. Together with other institutions, they are committed to recognising and valuing diversity at the University of Bayreuth, with the aim of eliminating and preventing individual and structural discrimination. Here’s an overview of other service centres: There is a special contact point for the compatibility of family and studying called “Family-friendly University” (Familiengerechte Hochschule). For students with disabilities or chronic illnesses, the University of Bayreuth offers support through becks. The Equal Opportunity service centre focuses on gender equality. Queer students are connected through a working group called “Working Group Queer”.
